October 29, 2026
Last year, "It's a Wonderful Life in Lafayette" ran on Sunday, December 7. This year the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce has set it for Friday, December 4, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lafayette Plaza. The hours are the same, but the day is different, and so is the evening around it. The tree lighting is now a weeknight event. The other two big holiday dates downtown fall on weeknights too, and the parking rules around the Plaza are being rewritten for weekday hours. December in downtown Lafayette this year runs on weeknight timing.
The program itself is unchanged. The Chamber's event page lists a free visit with Santa, free rides on the Lafayette Express, the official tree lighting, live music, crafts, holiday treats and photo ops. The Dana Green Team and Branagh Development are sponsoring the event, and it's free to attend.
The page also suggests what to do afterward:
"Arrive early to see Santa's arrival and plan to stay in downtown Lafayette for dinner!"
On a Sunday, that was optional. On a Friday, it fits the evening. The event ends at 6 p.m., right when the restaurants along Mt. Diablo Boulevard get busy for a Friday night, so after the lights go on, the crowd from the Plaza will be looking for tables at the same time as the usual weekend diners.
The tree stays up after the ceremony. The City of Lafayette's calendar notice says the Holiday Tree will be on display in the Plaza until January 1, 2027. If a crowded Friday isn't your thing, you'll have about four weeks to see it on a quieter evening.
The City's 2026 notice confirms a temporary street closure and restricted parking for the event but doesn't name the streets. Last year's permit gives a good idea of the footprint. In 2025, the City authorized closing Plaza Way between Moraga Road and Golden Gate Way from noon to 7 p.m., with no parking on Plaza Way. That permit didn't list a closure of Mt. Diablo Boulevard.
A noon closure didn't matter much on a Sunday. If 2026 follows the same pattern, a closure starting around midday on a Friday would overlap with a workday's errands, lunch trips and school pickups around the Plaza. That's still a guess based on last year's permit, so check the street signs posted that week.
Earlier years also explain the advice to arrive early. For the 2024 celebration, the Chamber said Santa would parade along Golden Gate Way from the Lafayette Historical Society and reach the Plaza at about 4:30 p.m. That year the Lafayette Express station was near the Park Theater. The 2026 route and arrival time haven't been posted. If the format holds, though, the parade's first half hour comes when many people are still finishing work.
Last year's stage lineup was all local. The Chamber's 2025 recap credits Lafayette Nursery School, Myeve Capozzi Vocal Training, Joy in Motion, the Stanley Middle School Chorus, the Acalanes High School Choir, Performing Academy and New You Dance Center. The 2026 performers haven't been announced yet.
The holiday season is arriving at the same time as a change in how downtown parking works. Lamorinda Weekly reported that the City Council adopted Ordinance 704 at its September 28 meeting. It's part of carrying out the City's 2026 Downtown Parking Management Study, which found a need for more long-term parking, especially for people who work downtown.
The changes most likely to affect a holiday evening:
The hours are where this meets the tree lighting. Under the accompanying resolution, the Ace and Gazebo lots would be metered Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and free on evenings and weekends. Dolores Drive, Happy Valley Road and Oak Hill Road would be metered Monday through Saturday during the same hours and free on evenings and Sundays. On last year's Sunday date, none of these meters would have run. On a Friday at 4 p.m., all of them would, until 6 p.m.
When the meters start is still open. Lamorinda Weekly's October 14 story says City staff will coordinate the changes to meters, payment systems and signage, and the story gives no start date. On December 4, check the signs where you park. At these rates, two hours costs $4 at most, and anyone arriving after 6 p.m. for dinner wouldn't pay at all.
The Friday tree lighting opens a stretch of evening events that runs through the next two weeks.
Wednesday, December 9, 5 to 7 p.m. The Chamber's Holiday Mixer & Vendor Fair returns to the Great Hall at St. Perpetua Church, 3454 Hamlin Road. Last year it was on Wednesday, December 10, so it's moving one day earlier with the calendar. Elegance Party Rentals sponsors the vendor fair. Selected Chamber-member vendors will be there, and some will sell products. Members and friends of the Chamber get in free, and nonmembers pay $10 in advance or $20 at the door. The Chamber says it will announce its 2026 nonprofit beneficiaries. The 2026 vendor list isn't out yet. The 2025 roster included Diablo Foods, Jaleh Bakery, Western Flyer Brewing, Batch & Brine, Big Woof Pet Supplies & Spa, AYK Brands LLC and Whole Foods. St. Perpetua is off Hamlin Road, away from the Plaza, so the downtown meter changes don't apply there.
December 10 to 19. Town Hall Theatre Company's ticketing calendar lists a December 10 preview, followed by performances December 11 through 19. The company, at 3535 School Street, is doing a panto this year: Robin Hood of the Reservoir: A Holiday Panto, written and directed by Heather Cousins, Lulu Braunstein and Kathleen Olson. In the plot, a power-hungry Sheriff threatens to drain the town's beloved reservoir, and Marian has to protect her home and her community. The show uses pop songs, slapstick and audience participation, and it's billed for all ages. In Lafayette, the reservoir joke lands right away. Last season's holiday Main Stage production was Snowbound: A Holiday Tale, so this is a change of style for Town Hall's December slot.
Most of the panto's run is on evenings and weekends, so the downtown meter hours mostly won't apply. The exception is the one weekday matinee, Thursday, December 17, at 10:30 a.m., which falls inside them.

Read in order, the calendar has a pattern. Downtown's December this year depends on how evenings are planned. Most events start at or after the end of the workday, and the meters, once they're running, stop at 6 p.m. Planning around that might look like this:
